An inquiry is under way in Bulgaria after a dead Irish tourist's organs were reportedly removed and his body filled with sawdust.

The discovery was made during a post mortem examination when the man's body was brought back to Ireland, the BBC website reported today.

His organs were returned to his family a month later, after the intervention of Irish embassy officials in Bulgaria, the report said.

It added that the circumstances of the October 2006 events are being investigated by the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The Department of Foreign Affairs could not immediately be reached for comment this evening.
