A Co Waterford factory worker who fractured his ankle when he slipped and fell on an ice rink during a weekend break in Dublin has lost a £30,000 damages claim for personal injuries.

Judge James Carroll, in the Circuit Civil Court, held the North Circular Road ice rink, owned by the Paynestown Property Company Ltd, had not provided Mr Liam Norris with ill fitting skates and had not been negligent in allowing pools of water develop on the ice.

"Anybody going to an ice rink accepts the ordinary hazards of the sport", Judge Carroll told Ms Pauline Walley counsel for Mr Des Kelly, director of the Paynestown Property Co Ltd. "If you walk on ice you slip, and it is for the express purpose of slipping and sliding that people go to skate", the judge said.
