Injured diver rescued off Co Down

A diver is recovering in hospital in the Isle of Man today after being rescued at Strangford Lough, Co Down.

A diver is recovering in hospital in the Isle of Man today after being rescued at Strangford Lough, Co Down.

It is understood the diver, who is in his 50s, had head injuries and was suspected of suffering from decompression sickness after surfacing too quickly.

The alarm was raised at 8.25pm last night by the crew of the dive boat, which was off the shore of Gunn's Island, south of the mouth of Strangford Lough.

A Coastguard Rescue team and RNLI lifeboats attended the scene.

The injured man was given oxygen aboard the dive boat and taken to the local golf course, from where the Dublin rescue helicopter took him to Noble's Hospital in the Isle of Man.
