Industrial action is due to begin at St Joseph's Hospital, Clonmel, Co Tipperary, this morning in a dispute over overcrowding.

INO- and SIPTU-represented nurses will operate a work-to-rule policy from today.

The hospital’s 150 nursing staff are protesting about overcrowding that has resulted in beds being placed in corridors.

Talks yesterday afternoon between nursing unions, health board officials and a Labour Relations Commission officer failed to avert strike action.

The hospital has decided that all elective admissions will cease today and has asked GPs referring patients to seek admissions to other hospitals.
