JAKARTA - Indonesian police announced yesterday that they had arrested the leader of the left wing Democratic People's Party (PRD), the man they accuse of masterminding the riots that rocked Jakarta last month. At least nine other activists were also detained in a weekend sweep.

Mr Budiman Sudjatmiko (26), was caught in a Jakarta suburb on Sunday night having gone underground since the unrest on July 27th and 28th. They army has accused the PRD of spreading hatred of President Suharto.
