Jakarta - Indonesian police opened fire on students in the north Sumatran city of Medan yesterday, killing two and injuring dozens, during an operation to free two colleagues taken hostage by the students.

The incident began when 500 students marched on a police station to demand the release of a student arrested for gambling. When police refused the request, the students took two policemen hostage.
