Independent News Media and two private-equity groups have bought APN News and Media for $2.2 billion.
This was the third attempt by Independent since last October to buy APN, the owner of New Zealand's largest newspaper and a string of radio stations.
Carlyle Group and Providence Equity Partners were the other companies in the purchasing consortium
The deal values APN shares at 6.10 Australian dollars compared to an earlier approach of 6.05.
