Ivory Coast leader names new cabinet
ABIDJAN – Ivory Coast’s president Laurent Gbagbo named a new cabinet yesterday despite international calls for him to step down, omitting his former finance minister who is in a line-up proposed by rival presidential claimant Alassane Ouattara.
Charles Koffi Diby has been widely praised for managing the nation’s economy.
Mr Diby’s nomination this week sparked speculation that Mr Ouattara, who says he won a disputed November 28th poll, had persuaded one of the few internationally known members of Mr Gbagbo’s team on to his side.
However, Mr Diby failed to turn up to the first meeting of the parallel cabinet on Monday. – (Reuters)
Asbo order for wealthy woman
LONDON – A wealthy woman was given an anti-social behaviour order (Asbo) after tormenting her neighbours and harassing one of them with a Nazi salute and the nickname Dr Frankenstein, a court has heard.
Patricia Bailey (61) screamed and shouted racist and homophobic remarks at her neighbours, subjecting them to a barrage of abuse over several years, witnesses said. Ms Bailey, a property developer who lived in a luxury apartment block near Regent Street, central London, was given an Asbo in June after residents complained about her behaviour. – (PA)
