25 years for helping Somali militants

WASHINGTON – A Virginia man has been sentenced to 25 years in prison for trying to help a Somali militant group and for threatening writers of the satirical South Park TV show for their depiction of the prophet Muhammad.

A federal judge in Virginia yesterday handed down the sentence for Zachary Chesser, who pleaded guilty. – (Reuters)

30 deaths from cold in Poland this month

WARSAW – Severe frost has already killed 30 people in Poland this month, bringing the death toll to more than 200 people this winter, police have said.

Uniformed services were patrolling allotment gardens and other popular locations for the homeless, distributing hot meals.

They have urged homeless people to move to public dormitories as temperatures dipped to -20 Celsius at night. – (Reuters)
