Istanbul - An imprisoned Vietnamese newspaper editor has been awarded the World Association of Newspapers' annual prize for outstanding contribution to the cause of press freedom.

Mr Doan Viet Hoat has spent 19 of the past 21 years in jail for his exhortations to Vietnamese governments to allow greater freedom of expression, and to institute economic reforms.

His prize, the 1998 Golden Pen of Freedom, will be presented in a ceremony in Kobe, Japan, next June.
