The Irish Farmers Association met Minister for Enterprise Richard Bruton yesterday, less than a week after he was the target of a major protest by 8,000 farmers on the streets of Dublin.

The protest was organised in response to a raid on the association’s offices by the Competition Authority, which was accused by the IFA of “protecting greedy retailers and criminalising farmers”.

The authority’s raid was not discussed at yesterday’s meeting but Mr Bruton was asked by the IFA to act

without delay to introduce legislation contained in the programme for government to curb the power of retail multiples.
