NEW YORK - IBM yesterday basked in the glory of the chess victory of its Deep Blue computer over world champion Gary Kasparov.

The victory is also a turning point for the computer giant, which has returned to profitability following heavy losses in the early 1990s. Following the surprise victory for the IBM computer, investors on Wall Street pushed IBM shares to record levels, up three dollars to $170.50 (£113).
