The employers' group IBEC today called for toll-free access to the Dublin Port Tunnel after 10pm each evening and at weekends and bank holidays.

The call was made in the group's submission to the National Roads Authority on the Dublin Port Tunnel draft tolling order.

IBEC is also recommending a certain quota of taxis be allowed to use the tunnel free of charge and that toll concessions be introduced for port employees and ferry passengers.

The group's Transport Director Reg McCabe also said it was imperative that tolls be reduced on both the Eastlink and Westlink for commercial traffic.

"The operation of a toll at Eastlink is an obstacle for truck traffic originating from the MTL container facility on the South Bank wishing to access the tunnel. Other tunnel freight traffic destined for points beyond Westlink - such as N4 and N7 - will be similarly penalised," he said.

He called for the Government to clarify the confusion about how the Port Tunnel will be operated well in advance of its opening to traffic.
