Hyde conference to focus on Famine

AMONG the speakers at this year's Douglas Hyde Conference will be the professor emeritus of modern history at UCD, Dr Kevin B. Nowlan, who will give a talk on The Politics of the Famine Years. The theme of this year's conference is The Great Hunger.

The conference will be opened, at St Nathy's College, Ballaghaderreen, Co Roscommon, next Friday by Ms Avril Doyle, Minister of State at the Department of the Taoiseach.

Prof Louis Cullen, of Trinity College, will give the inaugural lecture.
