Antibes - The Hungarian-born Sir Georg Solti, one of the most influential conductors of the 20th century, died in his sleep late on Friday night, in the south of France where he was on holiday.

Solti, whose real name was Gyuri Stern, was music director of the Royal Opera House in Covent Garden in the 1960s and went on to mould the Chicago Symphony Orchestra into one of the finest in the world. Solti won 31 Grammies, more than any other conductor.
