Ecumenical prayers for peace were said at a peace rally in Ballinasloe, Co Galway, yesterday evening when hundreds of people turned out in a spontaneous effort to express their hopes for peace.

The attendance at the event, organised by a Lawrencetown woman, Mrs Maura Joyce, represented many religious beliefs and also included a large number of children.

The participants, who all wore white ribbons, were addressed by the president of the local Chamber of Commerce, Mr Terry Noone, and the vice chairman of the local Urban Council, Mr Sean Tully.
