The International Humanitarian Award for 1996 is to be presented to the SDLP leader, Mr John Hume, by Notre Dame University in the US.
Previous winners of the award include President Jimmy Carter; Mother Teresa; Jean Vanier, founder of the Arche movement for the handicapped; and Helen Suzman, who campaigned against apartheid.
