Mr John Hume has been given the International Human Rights Award by the Washington based International Human Rights Law Group, of which President Clinton is the honorary chairman, writes Joe Carroll in Washington.
The award was accepted on Mr Hume's behalf by the Irish ambassador, Mr Dermot Gallagher.
