The Mayo County Manager, Mr Des Mahon, issued an appeal and a warning to house holders yesterday to pay their water charges or face prosecution.

His statement followed cases in Ballina District Court this week in which the urban council summoned local residents for the first time to have their water supplies disconnected.

Four of the cases were adjourned generally, four were struck out and Judge Dan Shields made orders in two cases to have the supplies disconnected.

He also ordered the payment of £90 costs plus outlay in each of the two cases and granted stays of two months.
