A meeting of Galway City Council was disrupted yesterday when 80 protesters from the stormed the chamber in opposition to the new €100 household charge, writes John Ballon.

Almost two dozen gardaí restored order as the scene developed, with protesters banging on doors and chairs.

Shouting slogans like “can’t pay, won’t pay”, the protesters, organised by the United Left Alliance, forced the meeting to be adjourned while gardaí brought the protest under control.

The meeting resumed after about 30 minutes as the protesters left the building.
