THIRTY workers are to be laid off at Belleek Castle Hotel, Ballina, Co Mayo, because of a drop off in business which the management has attributed to a travellers' encampment on the road lending to the hotel.

Three American travel agents had withdrawn their business and there was also a decrease in other bookings because of obstruction, according to Ms Jaqueline Doran, a spokeswoman for the management.

"We have complained to Mayo County Council and Tourism Minister Enda Kenny but nothing has happened," she said.
