Thousands of households in Meath and Louth are without electricity this evening following a major power outage.

Thousands of households in Meath and Louth are without electricity this evening following a major power outage.

The ESB said the problem was the result of a fault at the Drybridge power station in Drogheda where some lines were "tripping".

A spokesman said power had returned to many households in the area and engineers hoped to have the problem completely fixed by 9pm tonight.
