Home on the Range - by Jamie Reid (Mainstream, £6.99, in UK)

This novel was probably timed for the Cheltenham races, so this review comes just too late. It is about racing, of course, and it starts in Dublin and revolves chiefly around betting coups and racetrack rivalries. One of the leading characters is an unlikely sounding professional gambler named Connor "Doe" Mulcahy, and needless to say sex ritually rears its weary head, but horses and intrigue and the racetrack are the real themes. Perhaps best appreciated by lovers of the turf, but can be read as a straightforward thriller.
