Some 28 people were killed in various accidents as Egyptians flocked to the banks of the Nile to celebrate a spring holiday dating to pharaonic times, security sources said today.

They said 15 people drowned yesterday while swimming in the world's longest river, and nine were killed after their boats overturned on the Nile during the Sham el-Nessim holiday, which is celebrated by Christians and Muslims.

Four people were killed and at least 35 injured in car accidents. Egypt has one of the highest road accident rates in the world, mostly from speeding and bad roads.
