Senior Counsel Gerard Hogan has been nominated to the High Court by the Government.
Mr Hogan, who was called to the Bar of Ireland in 1984, will fill a vacancy arising from the promotion of Mr Justice Liam McKechnie to the Supreme Court.
He will be appointed to the post by President Mary McAleese, having received the Government's nomination, in accordance with Constitutional procedures.
Mr Hogan previously lectured on law in Trinity College Dublin from 1982 to 2007.
He recently represented the Seanad Committee on Members Interests in a case brought by former Fianna Fáil Senator Ivor Callely.
The committee said in a report that Mr Callely had misrepresented his place of residence for the purposes of claiming expenses. Mr Callely said he had been portrayed by the committee as "a pariah" and "a thoroughly despicable person".
