An estimated 136.6 million Americans have voted in the US election, based on 88 per cent of the country’s precincts tallied and projections for absentee ballots according to Michael McDonald, of George Mason University in Virginia.

That would give 2008 a 64.1 per cent turnout rate, the highest since 65.7 per cent 100 years ago.
