Limerick gardai want to hear from anyone who witnessed the killing of painter Mr James "Jamsie" O'Connor (35), last Friday night.

"We know there were a lot of people in the area at the time who saw this incident happening," said Insp Pat Sullivan, Roxboro, yesterday.

Gardai have not yet established a motive, but have ruled out suggestions that the victim was struck by a car before being stabbed five times.

It is understood the car stopped and a number of men got out and an argument started with Mr O'Connor. He received multiple stab wounds to the abdomen. Three men were detained and released over the weekend and a file is being prepared for the DPP.

The funeral of the father of three, who was a community worker and champion darts player and lived at Clarina Park, Ballinacurra Weston, takes place today to Mount St Oliver Cemetery.
