A Liberian with a crushed hand was responding well to treatment in Cork University Hospital yesterday, after he was lifted off a British registered Spanish fishing vessel early in the morning.

The man was taken from the Breydon Mallard at around 6 a.m. by an Irish Marine Emergency Services helicopter based in Shannon. The vessel "was 50 to 60 miles out from Bantry.
