The wife of British Secretary of State for the North Peter Hain is recovering in hospital after a serious road collision.

Elizabeth Haywood crashed on the M4 near Bridgend, south Wales, last night while driving her husband's BMW in heavy weather.

Mr Hain's spokesman said the minister had cleared his diary to be at her side at the Princess of Wales Hospital, Bridgend, where she is recovering from a broken foot.

He said she was "shaken up and bruised, but other than that she is fine".

The spokesman said: "The car was a write-off. She had to escape through the windscreen." No other cars were involved, he said.
