Georgetown - An American-born woman, formerly a Marxist, and a reformed socialist are the leading contenders to become Guyana's president in elections today.

Mrs Janet Jagan (77) has been Prime Minister since her husband, Guyana's late leader Cheddi Jagan, died nine months ago. She moved from Chicago 54 years ago. Her main opponent, Mr Desmond Hoyte (68), ruled from 1985 to 1992.
