Gunmen opened fire at a checkpoint in the Iraqi town of Baquba today, killing six policemen and wounding two, police said.

The attack took place in the centre of the town, 60 km (40 miles) north of Baghdad.

It is in a religiously mixed area that has seen frequent attacks by insurgents from the Sunni Arab minority seeking to topple the Shai-led government.
