A man charged with the murder of journalist Veronica Guerin told the three judges at the Special Criminal Court yesterday he was refusing to recognise the court.

Mr Justice Johnson, presiding, told Mr Paul Ward that he was legally represented by his solicitor, Mr Ernie Hanahoe.

Earlier, Mr Hanahoe said he had received instructions from his client to challenge the jurisdiction of the Special Criminal Court to deal with the case.

Mr Ward (32), of Windmill Park, Crumlin, Dublin, was returned for trial to the Special Criminal Court last month from the Dublin District Court.

He is charged with the murder of Ms Guerin at Naas Road, Clondalkin, on June 26th last year and was remanded in custody until June 10th.
