An expert group to examine the Probation and Welfare Service has been established by the Minister for Justice, Equality and Law Reform, Mr O'Donoghue. It is to report back to the Minister within four months.

"The objective is a more balanced criminal justice system," Mr O'Donoghue said. While more prison places were needed, it was also timely to look at alternatives to custody, he added.
