A group calling itself the Wexford Environmental Alliance has applied for outline planning permission to build a halting site on privately owned land outside Enniscorthy.

Mr Tony Baker told Today with Pat Kenny yesterday that he was hoping to get EU funding for the project because local authority halting sites were funded from the public purse.

He said that, with few exceptions, local authorities were not doing their best to provide adequate accommodation for travellers.

A spokesman for Wexford Co Council confirmed that an application for a 10 unit site on half a hectare of land had been made. "We are hoping to make Ia decision within the next fortnight," Mr Clem Daly of the planning section said.
