Guatemala City - An extreme right-wing group, Jaguar Justice, has admitted the murder of Bishop Juan Gerardi, who was beaten to death on April 26th, according to a letter.

"We killed Juan Gerardi," the group said in a letter sent to San Juan Comalapa mayoral candidate, Mr Carlos Catu Otzoy, which he released on Wednesday.

Dr Gerardi (75) was killed two days after publishing a report on human rights abuses committed during a 36-year civil war which ended a year and a half ago. The report blamed most human rights abuses on Guatemala's army.

In its letter, the group derided the left-wing New Guatemalan Democratic Front as "the big Marxist communist party" and called the organisation "foolish."
