Dutch police have confirmed that an Irish man has been arrested in Amsterdam on foot of an extradition application from the Greek authoriities.

Mr Tommy Savage (53), from Swords in Co Dublin, was arrested over allegations he was involved in a plot to smuggle huge quantities of cannabis into Greece.

He is being held in custody in Amsterdam on a provisional warrant. Under current extradition law, Greek police have three days to lodge formal extradition proceedings.

Mr Savage, who has been living in The Netherlands for a number of years, is also being investigated by gardaí over suspicions he is heavily involved in importing drugs into Ireland.
