Government panicking over energy policy - Sargent

The Government has made Ireland the most car-dependent country in the world, Green Party leader Trevor Sargent has claimed.

The Government has made Ireland the most car-dependent country in the world, Green Party leader Trevor Sargent has claimed.

Opening his party's ardfheis in Co Kilkenny, Mr Sargent said that, when it comes to energy, the Government parties are in a state of panic.

"They have frightened off the biggest wind energy companies and they have dragged their heels on ways to save energy in buildings old and new," he said.

"Maybe Frank Dunlop, the former FF Government Press secretary understands what makes this government tick more than most. He told the Mahon Tribunal yesterday that when a crooked FF politician was bought, he stayed bought.

"When you see who dines in the Fianna Fáil tent at the Galway Races, it is clear this government is well bought by those who benefit most from Irish society being more divided and vulnerable than ever."

Mr Sargent added that Fianna Fáil and the Progressive Democrats were a "disgrace to the men and women of 1916 and the principles of sovereignty and equality for which they died."
