Development work on the internationally-renowned fishing river, the Moy, in north Mayo, is predicted to increase tourism revenue by £1.2 million a year, the Minister of State at the Department of the Marine, Mr Eamon Gilmore, said yesterday in Ballina.
The newly-developed Cathedral Beat on the Moy will enable 2,500 extra anglers to use the river this year, according to Mr Gilmore, who opened the facility. The works, costing £90,000, were carried out by the Central Fisheries Board in collaboration with the Office of Public Works.
The Ballina Salmon Festival also opened yesterday. The programme includes a regatta, a pageant, a Mardi Gras evening and a race meeting on the closing day, July 21st.
