A German tourist appeared at a special sitting of Athlone District Court last night charged with dangerous driving arising out of a fatal accident outside Athlone, Co Westmeath, earlier in the day.

Retired local authority manager Mr Hans Otto Suckau (71), of Buxtehade, is charged with the alleged offence at Barrymore, Kiltoon, Athlone. Sgt James Furey (43), a soldier from Ballincollig, Co Cork, died as a result of injuries sustained in a two-vehicle collision at around 3 p.m.

Mr Suckau was remanded on bail by Judge James O'Sullivan to Athlone District Court on Monday. His European travel ID card is being held by the court.
