German police searched an apartment in the western city of Darmstadt yesterday amid media reports a man arrested in connection with the Madrid bombings had lived in Germany, prosecutors said today.

Spanish officials said yesterday that police had arrested five more people over the commuter train bombings that killed 190 people, raising the total number of suspects in detention to 18.

Neither Spanish nor German officials could comment on German media reports that at least one of those arrested had lived in Darmstadt.

The September 11th, 2001, attacks on US cities were believed to have been planned in Spain and Germany.
