Santo Domingo - Hurricane Georges battered the Dominican Republic with powerful wind and heavy rain yesterday Tuesday after a deadly tear through Puerto Rico and the Lesser Antilles.

"The nation must prepare for the worst," said the Dominican civil defence chief, Mr Elpidio Baez, urging the country's eight million people to stay at home as high winds toppled trees and power lines on the south-east coast.
