General Motors will cut about 900 jobs at its Ellesmere Port plant in Cheshire to boost manufacturing productivity for the Astra model.

GM Europe said in a statement it would reduce shifts at the plant from three to two, affecting about 900 jobs. Workers would be offered voluntary redundancies.

The move followed unsuccessful negotiations with labour representatives who wanted to share production cuts across other plants in Germany and Belgium that make the model.
