Gardai in south Dublin are seeking witnesses to a crash today when a lorry hit a bridge and failed to stop.

Motorists reported that a section of the bridge fell into the road, narrowly missing cars.

A Garda statement said the incident happened at about 2pm, when a lorry traveling south hit a footbridge, known locally as the Newvale footbridge, which spans the M50 motorway.

The section of road is where the N11 merges with the southern end of the M50 to become the M11.

Gardai at Shankill asked drivers travelling on the M50 southbound or coming from the N11 onto the M50 heading south, who may have witnessed the collision, to contact them.

They also asked lorry drivers and owners who may have travelled the route at this time to examine their vehicles for damage.
