A man is critically ill in hospital after he was attacked in Thurles, Co Tipperary.
The 25-year-old is in a critical condition in South Tipperary General Hospital after he was assaulted at Liberty Square at 1.30am.
A 22-year-old suspect was arrested and is being questioned at Thurles Garda station under section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act.
He may be questioned for up to 24 hours.
Gardaí appealed for witnesses to contact them at Thurles station, or at any Garda station.
