Gardaí yesterday expressed confidence that CCTV footage would prove of major assistance in their investigation into the death of a father of two who died in hospital in Cork after an assault which is now being treated as an unlawful killing.

Patsy Deasy (57), from McGrath Park on Church Road in Blackrock, suffered head injuries when he was assaulted outside the Red Cove Inn on Avenue de Rennes in Mahon on the south side of Cork city in the early hours of Saturday.

An employee of Cork City Council, Mr Deasy and his wife, Ann, had been attending a 60th birthday party.

He suffered a serious brain injury after he was struck and fell to the ground, hitting his head.
