Gardaí  said today they were following "a definite line of inquiry" following an alleged sexual assault on two young girls in Carlow.

The 12-year-old and 13-year-old girls were allegedly assaulted on wasteground near the John Sweeney Park estate in Carlow town.

A Garda spokesman could not confirm reports that a 15-year-old boy was at the centre of the investigation.

Gardai in Carlow have appealed to anyone in the area at the time to come forward.
