Gardaí in Portlaoise are investigating an incident in which a woman suffered serious head injuries.
The woman was found lying at the foot of the stairs at her home in the Mountrath Road in the town this morning.
The woman, who is in her forties, was taken to Portlaoise General Hospital but was later transferred to Tullamore General Hospital.
