Gardaí are investigating the cause of a fire that destroyed the Kinsale Rubber factory in Co Cork last night.

Thirty fire officers from the Kinsale, Bandon and Carrigaline brigades responded to the fire, which was reported at 9.45pm.

The fire took more than six hours to control, and a small number of officers are on site today dealing with "hot spots".

The factory and adjoining offices were destroyed, although surrounding buildings were not damaged.

Local residents expressed concern at the level of fumes and smoke, and a fire brigade spokesman said they were advised to remain in their homes with doors and windows closed.

It is understood five people were employed at the factory.
