Two members of the Garda were hospitalised early this morning following a collision between a garda car and another vehicle near Letterkenny, Co Donegal.

The incident happened at Lisfannon on the road from Letterkenny to Bridgend at approximately 1.30am.

Both gardai, as well as the driver and lone occupant of the second car, were taken to Letterkenny General Hospital, where they were treated for their injuries.

One of the gardai remains in a serious condition this evening. 

"These two gardaí were injured while out in service of the community. I hope that both of them make a full recovery," Garda Commissioner Fachtna Murphy said this afternoon.

The Garda Siochana Ombudsman Commission has been contacted and an investigation is underway.
