Gardai have confirmed that they are investigating former Athlone IT lecturer Dr Niall McElwee to see if he may have breached the Sex Offenders Act in Ireland.
Under the Act, people convicted of a sexual offences outside the State are obliged to notify gardaí provided the crime is also considered an offence in this State.
Dr McElwee was forced to resign his post earlier this month after admitting he had been convicted of indecent assault on teenage girls in the Netherlands two years ago.
He had been director of the college's Centre for Child and Youth Care Learning.
